THE presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), General Muhamadu Buhari, has picked Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Latter Rain Bible Church as his running mate for the April 2011 presidential election. General Buhari, in a press release signed by the Publicity Secretary of his campaign organization, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, said his choice of Pastor Bakare was borne out of the need to put the best foot forward in what promises to be a decisive political challenge for the soul of Nigeria.
According to him, “we have seen the uncommon enthusiasm of our people to register to vote in spite of the many challenges of the exercise that speaks of their desire to do what Tunisians and Egyptians are doing on the streets through the ballot box in April.
“There is a compelling need to give them a ticket that will make all their sacrifices worth the while and that is what we have done,” he said.
General Buhari also condemned serial violence in Borno, Plateau and some other parts of the country, saying the Federal Government appeared totally helpless about the situation.
He stated that it was sad that such dastardly acts were taking place without any coordinated response from the government to guarantee the safety of life and property.
He noted that a responsible leadership must not agonise over the virtual breakdown of security in parts of the country, but it must organise the security system to deal with the situation first and create the atmosphere for social justice to flourish to end the conditions that made citizens let loose against each other.
General Buhari, while condoling with the Borno State government, its people as well as all those who lost loved ones in a recent violence, sued for peace among all Nigerians and called on the government to sit up and bring an end to insecurity.
On the allegation by Jigawa State governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, that his supporters were responsible for a hate text message circulating after the PDP primaries, Geneneral Buhari said it was regrettable that some people could not appreciate that certain offices required a high degree of responsibility in utterances.
“What evidence has he got to say that the text came from any of my supporters? Has he gone to the service providers and they told him the text originated from a phone traceable to anyone who is my supporter? I condemn any attempt to spread hate among Nigerians but I suspect this may be mischief from our opponents who cannot face issues but dwell only on weeping up emotions. And it may appear that the governor may be aware of those behind this hatchet job,” Buhari explained.
Buhari said that he had never been involved in the zoning debate, because the Federal Republic of Nigeria with all the people within, no matter their religion was his constituency. “Those who don't want the progress of our people have spent fortunes over the years to raise silly propaganda about me. I have been around for some years and have challenged them to bring out one person I ever discriminated against based on faith but they are yet to take up the challenge. They should continue to tell lies about me just as I will continue to tell the truth about them,” he said, adding that the weapons that worked for them in the past will fail them this time round.
Meanwhile, the governor of Kano State, who also is the presidential candidate of All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP), Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, has picked former governor of Edo State, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, as his vice-presidential candidate.
Chief Oyegun, who was a governor on the ticket of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the deputy national chairman of the party, emerged as Mallam Shekarau’s running mate after consultation with ANPP and the party’s presidential candidate.
A statement signed by Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Sule Ya’u Sule and made available to the Nigerian Tribune, on Monday, in Kano said the choice of Chief Odigie-Oyegun became necessary because he possessed qualities required to be elected as a transparent and credible leader.
The statement also said Chief Odigie-Oyegun was a tested and trusted politician, who contributed to the development of Edo State when he was governor of the state.
Mallam Sule also said the nomination of Chief Odigie-Oyegun was as a result of thorough job done by the party, Mallam Shekarau and loyalists of the party, who had at hearts, the interest of the party and believed that a good running mate was needed for the ANPP presidential candidate.
He noted that now that a good running mate had been nominated for Mallam Shekarau, the race to dislodge the incumbent president had been concluded, because the combination was a perfect one capable of winning the forthcoming election.
Alhaji Sule then urged the people to cast their votes for the ANPP candidates in the April elections.
Chief Odigie-Oyegun, a retired federal permanent secretary, was born in August, 1939 in Warri, Delta State. He is currently the deputy chairman (South) of the ANPP.
